About Casey

I’m Casey, a former computer technician. These days, I focus on the part of the work I always enjoyed most: helping people understand their computers and feel more confident using them.

Cairns Friendly Computer Lessons offers free one-on-one computer lessons for seniors aged 60+.

Where it started

Working as a Computer Technician

I began my working life in a small computer business, where I worked as a computer technician repairing, building and supporting computers.

My work included diagnosing faults, troubleshooting software and hardware problems, providing remote support, setting up devices and helping clients when their technology was not behaving the way it should.

I loved the work. Every computer with a problem felt like a puzzle waiting to be solved, and there was always something new to learn.

Over time, though, I discovered that one part of the job challenged me in a completely different way: teaching people how to use their computers for themselves.

The turning point

Learning How to Teach Beginners

For months, one of my clients kept asking me to give him computer lessons. I kept saying no.

I knew computers well, but I was not confident enough in my teaching skills to charge someone for lessons. I told him he would be better off finding somebody with more experience.

Eventually, he suggested an exchange: I would teach him about computers, and he would help me learn how to teach.

During our sessions, he gave me honest feedback. He stopped me when an explanation was not clear enough, told me when I was moving too quickly, and pointed out the small steps I was skipping because they had become automatic to me.

Through that partnership, I learned how differently a beginner experiences a computer task. I learned to notice the tiny actions that experienced users barely think about anymore, to slow down without talking down to someone, and to explain technology in a way that builds understanding rather than simply getting the task finished.

I also discovered how rewarding teaching could be.

Putting it into practice

Developing My Teaching Approach

I took what I learned from that first student and ran with it.

I began providing paid computer lessons to clients as part of my work as a computer technician. The more people I taught, the more my teaching philosophy and methodology began to take shape.

I learned that good computer teaching is not about showing somebody a task once and expecting them to remember it. It means understanding where they are starting, breaking unfamiliar tasks into manageable steps, making room for questions and mistakes, and changing the explanation when something is not making sense.

Every student taught me something about teaching.

Over time, those experiences developed into the approaches I use today, including the Companion Method and Stepping-Stone Pathway, both designed to help students build genuine knowledge, confidence and independence rather than simply follow instructions.

Coming home

Bringing What I Learned Back to Cairns

I eventually left the computer industry, but I never lost the part of the work I loved most: watching someone become more confident using their computer and realise they could do something independently.

While living in South East Queensland, I started Lockyer Valley Computer Lessons as a personal tutoring project and continued working one-on-one with students. That time gave me more opportunities to teach, learn from different people and further develop my skills as a tutor.

I have since returned home to Cairns, bringing everything I learned while I was away back with me.

Through Cairns Friendly Computer Lessons, I now provide free personalised one-on-one computer lessons for seniors aged 60+ across Cairns and surrounding suburbs.

My hope is to help seniors in the Cairns community feel more confident and independent using their computers. Technology can open the door to communication, information, services, hobbies and opportunities that increasingly exist online. By helping people understand how to use their computers for themselves, I hope to help open more of that digital world to them.
